![]() ![]() The NBA’s Chicago Zephyrs relocated in 1963 to become the Baltimore Bullets, and while the Bullets did have success in their new city-including an Eastern Conference title in 1971-their stay in Baltimore proved to be short, as they moved to suburban Landover in 1973 and eventually became the Washington Bullets (now the Washington Wizards). When the Civic Center first opened in downtown Baltimore-on the site of Old Congress Hall-it was supposed to attract a third major sports team to the city, and provide a boost in the effort to modernize its surrounding area. While a replacement has been eyed for decades, the venue that first opened in 1962 as the Baltimore Civic Center continues to plug along, attracting major concerts, shows, and performances to Baltimore. To know the history of Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena is to know how the facility has ably served a major market despite being undeniably obsolete. Guests are encouraged to check out the history museum on the 15th floor and the artwork throughout the building before or after their visit to the top. TIMES: Visit the top of the clock on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. TOP OF THE CLOCK VISIT COST: $8 Access into the clock room is by ships ladder which requires that each guest sign a liability waiver stating they are aware of the danger of climbing the ladder. Visitors can also take in the recent reinstallation of the iconic clock by the Balzer Family Clock Works. Guests are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture the 24-foot clock dials as a backdrop. The visit starts with a video and ends on a very high note as guests climb to the 16th floor via a “ships ladder”’ into the marvelous industrial mechanical room clock room, which houses the clock mechanism, the elevator switchboards, and motors. For $8, you can also take a tour of the clock room and see the inner working of the famed Bromo clock up close. Admission to the galleries, artist studios, and museum is free. You can also learn more about the historical building in the museum on the 15th floor. Many of the building’s artists will be on site so you can see their works in progress and learn about their processes. During the public access weekends, guests will have an opportunity to view artwork throughout the building, including all 15 floors of working artist studios and special exhibitions. ![]()
